Long live bamboo sticks

Bamboo is a technique developed by artist Antoon Versteegde. Bamboo sticks are connected with elastic bands to create large works of art. We look at some of his works, and also examine bamboo sticks ourselves to discover what makes them so strong. The children also receive a short introduction to force distribution, after which the students start building their design in groups. Just like Antoon Versteegde, they make installations using several hundred bamboo sticks (+-1m long) and very wide elastic bands. These constructions can go in any direction: pyramids, towers, triumphal arches, large bamboo animals...

Please note that this is an activity that can only be done in a spacious room or outside, because we are often talking about constructions of several meters high. The different classes can each build their own construction, or continue working on one large construction throughout the day. The construction can possibly remain as a temporary work of art (in which case we will charge for the material left behind), or we will dismantle the construction during the last fifteen minutes with a group of children.
