Actief burgerschap
Burgerschapscompetenties maken deel uit van de nieuwe eindtermen voor het leerplichtonderwijs. In september 2019 werden de nieuwe eindtermen ingevoerd in de eerste graad van het secundair onderwijs. Nadien volgen stelselmatig de andere graden en het basisonderwijs. Het actieve engagement van leerlingen neemt er, meer dan bij de huidige eindtermen het geval is, een centrale plaats in.
Rol als burger
Uit internationaal onderzoek naar burgerschapseducatie blijkt dat Vlaamse leerlingen uit het tweede jaar van het secundair onderwijs vandaag beter zijn voorbereid om hun rol als burger in de maatschappij op te nemen dan in 2009, maar dat er toch nog ruimte is voor verbetering. Scholen zetten al op verschillende manieren in op burgerschapscompetenties. Deze acties zorgen echter eerder voor een verhoging van de kennis bij leerlingen en leiden minder tot een echte mentaliteits- en gedragswijziging.
Participatie van leerlingen
In vergelijking met het buitenland zijn Vlaamse scholen minder gericht op participatie en betrokkenheid van leerlingen en leraren. Participatie van leerlingen kan echter een belangrijke hefboom zijn voor het verwerven van verschillende burgerschapscompetenties en dus voor het vormen van kinderen en jongeren die de samenleving van morgen mee kunnen vormgeven.
